이제 SAT의 출제경향을 살펴보자.

 (Q 1) Which of the following conforms to the conventions of Standard English?

(A)     She can handle any problems happening at school that it is huge.

(B)      She can handle any problems happening at school: she is very capable.

(C)      She can handle any problems happening at school she is very capable.

(D)     She can handle any problems happening at school, she is very capable.

 

정답은 (B)이다. 비록 colon다음에 문장이 쓰였지만, 나머지 세 선택지는 더 큰 문제가 있기 때문에 (B)가 가장 좋은 답이다.

(A) that it is huge가 school을 수식하는데 it(=school)이 또 쓰임. 관계사절에서는 있을 수 없는 일

(C)   She can handle any problems happening at school(문장)과 she is very capable(문장) 사이에 아무 연결장치(접속사)도 없다. 용납할 수 없는 경우.

(D) (C)와는 달리 문장과 문장 사이에 comma가 쓰였으나 comma는 접속사가 아니다. Comma slice라는 전형적인 틀린 경우

 

(B)도 colon 다음에 문장이 쓰인 예외적인 경우이나, 다른 선택지들처럼 심하게 틀린 것은 아니므로 정답이다. SAT는 multiple choice(객관식)라는 걸 최대로 이용한 문제이다.

그러나 선택지 중에 colon과 semi-colon이 모두 쓰였고, 둘 다 elaboration devices로 쓰였고 둘 다 뒤에 문장이 쓰였다면, 정답은 semi-colon이 쓰인 문장이고, 둘 다 뒤에 phrase가 쓰였다면, 정답은 colon이 쓰인 문장이다.

결국 colon과 simi-colon 다음에 문장이 쓰인 게 답인지 phrase가 쓰인 게 답인지는 다른 선택지와 비교해서 결정하는 거다.

 

문제를 하나 더 분석해보자.

 

(Q 2) Which of the following conforms to the conventions of Standard English?

(A)     She can handle any problems happening at school, because they are not hers.

(B)      She can handle any problems happening at school She is very capable.

(C)      She can handle any problems happening at school; schoolwork-related problems, problems with friends, tuition problems.

(D)     She can handle any problems happening at school, who is the biggest in the state.

 

(C) semi-colon 다음에 phrases가 쓰었으니 틀린 문장이거나 예외적인 문장이다. 이걸 결정하는 것은 (C)거 아니고 (A), (B), (D)이다.

물론 왜 예외적인 경우가 발생하는지 정확한 이유를 안다면 (C)만으로도 문제를 풀 수 있겠으나 만족스러운 설명을 본 적이 없다. 특히 SAT Official Guide의 설명은 헛소리이다. SAT Official Guide의 헛소리는 다음 편에 소개/설명한다.

(A) they는 problems를 가리키므로, 내용상 본인의 문제가 아니므로 처리할 수 있다는 건 앞뒤가 맞지 않는다. 

(B) She can handle any problems happening at school(문장)과 She is very capable(문장) 사이에 접속사가 없다.

(D) school은 사람이 아니므로 who를 사용할 수 없다.

(C)를 제외하고는 모두 치명적인 문제가 있으므로 정답은 (C)이다.
